Google gives more relevant results on average than other search engines. That's the only reason Google become so popular. Until another search engine does it better, people will keep using Google.

Agree, I remember first using Infoseek because it was accurate, but when Google comes along, the convenience of Google and its accuracy makes it so that I no longer bother to use other search engines.

Google is popular because of its simplicity, its a great candidate as a homepage because its direct to the point. A search box is waiting for you right when you open your browser. Results are almost always what you needed, totally reliable.
