Why do merchants need affiliate programs?

    Hi all,

I'm not sure I quite understand why affiliate programs want to charge merchants thousands of dollars for connecting them with the affiliates that ultimately do all the work. I get the fact that a stupid merchant can stiff an affiliate and the program would try to minimize this, but every merchant isn't like that.

I'm launching a new website soon and I'm looking for affiliates. I have had the site coded so that I will be able to track all my customers and pay whoever sent them accordingly. I would love to hear from some affiliates on what it would take to earn your trust. Especially if you have been burned in the past. I'm trying to figure out if I really need an affiliate program or not. As soon as the word is out what I'm doing everyone will want to send me people.

    Am I missing something?

Sometimes affiliates may not even find your program if you aren't connected to a merchant.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for your input. Of course visibility would be an issue at first. With my company I need to scale my employee base with my demand so this is acceptable to me.

Does anyone know of a place where merchants can find affiliates or vice versa?
