Why do links disappear?

I launched my site on June 1st 2009 and in 2 months showed around 800 backlinks on Submit Express. One day I checked and there are only 180. Any ideas where or why they may have gone?

It might just simply because people have removed the link that you placed on their sites. Here's my advice for you, instead of keep monitoring the numbers, why not spend time building more links?

They all disappeared at about the same time - thats what I find a bit fishy.

hi kevmont, this is called google dance phenomenon which you should not worry, this happen when google refreshing their server which is likely to happen once in couple of months. If you are building links at this time, you will also see this scenario....dont worry, your indexed page will comes live soon.

There is no such thing as a permanent link on the internet.

You have the word of the seller, but if the website gets sold, then what? ;)

It may be a problem of indexing too.

I've come to the conclusion that it's a blip by submit express, because every now and then they reappear, or some of them do, but then they disappear again.
