Why Do I rank high then low then back high again?

i am confused. My ecommerce website.

Why is it that sometimes I rank 1st page for product keywords, lots of them and I get a lot of traffic, then sometimes I can never be found anywhere in Google for the same keywords, then about 1 month later I'm back ranking high again.. It seems to go back and forth back and forth between ranking high and low and usually I don't do anything in between to make it rank HIGH or LOW???????????

Could a competitor be doing this somehow? What is going on?
Site is 1 year old ++

This is often referred to as the google dance, you should be constantly building
backlinks and as your site ages this will happen less often.

as more links point to other competing sites they will increase in rankings thus lowering yours.

Like the King stated above. keep up those back links.

Thanks.. When you say link building do you mean by commenting on blogs?

commenting on blogs, links like the ones in our signatures, submitting to web directories, and so forth. Basically any website that links back you is what you should focus on.
