Hi, I'm on a Windows 2k3 VPS running Mail enable I recently had a limit of 1000 relays a day, and I was constantly hitting it. and it would freeze my emails for 24 hours. So I had it increased to 5000, and I STILL hit the limit! I kinda just want to know what is considered a "Relay" and what is really causing this huge amount of Relays? I really don't send a lot of email. I have turned off email services on certain domains because they WERE getting a lot of spam, is the return bounce what is adding up here? What is the real solution to removing this problem? Do I just keep asking for more relays in my limit? 10,000? 30,000? I've also heard of mail servers being hyjacked some how some way, and you end up on a spam list cause they think your a spammer, when really their just bouncing the spam off you and then to their target? I dunno. Any info would be appreciated.
Hi, A relay in smtp terms is a server that takes email from a mail client and then sends it to correct server for the domain. A common issues with mail enable is that something causes the queue processor to freeze which causes a build up of the inbound or outbound mail queues. The work around is to restart mail enable to resume queue processing. You didn't say which queue was filling up in mail enable so it makes it difficult to recommend any changes to your configuration to reduce the about of spam.
