Whether it's a cold bottle of Coke or a room temperature glass of Jack Daniels, I cannot for the life of me figure out why people put ice in their drinks. I can understand why someone might want to keep a cold drink cold, such as a soft drink but ice cubes melt in a short time and dilute the beverage, turning it into little more than colored water. And don't even get me started on soft drink dispensers in fast-food joints. IMHO, in terms of quality, the stuff that comes out of those things is unfit for human consumption and a rip-off as well. I wasn't always such a purist about drinks, but over time I have come to detest flat beverages. Does anybody else share these opinions?
Yeah i totally agree, actually with coke if you drink half of it and the ice cubes have melted generally you will through the other half away. It is a total waste.... So, maybe a time to think of a good invention
I think people feel the drink get more appetizing visually if they put cubes in it Probably not because it taste good. Visual presentation is a major part of food consumption for sure.
I love a nice cider over ice on a hot day...it's refreshing. I don't normally use ice though, unless it's in a glass of water, or whiskey.
We get Ice balls these days. These are small, hollow golf balls that have water inside them. You freeze them in the freezer, and put them in drinks. Since it has a plastic covering on top, it doesn't dilute the drink, and also keeps the drink cool. So, i get my coke cold and pure!
Drinks such as coke are kind of strong anyway. Ice gets it cold instantly and dillutes it only a little if you drink it fast enough. Don't open a coke and let it sit. Drink it.
And that's my point, micksss. Isn't it a double standard for people to put ice in almost every drink except beer? If beer wasn't "meant" to be diluted, why is it ok to do so for other beverages?
Beer is already weak...why dilute it even more? Thats like saying drink straight (100% volume) alchohol all the time because there isn't a point in diluting it.
Well I think restaurants, bars, etc do it because it makes them money - If you take a half a cup of coke and put some ice in it you have a full cup of coke - plus, people usually like their cold drinks really cold and their hot drinks really hot. Personally, I buy single servings amd put them in the freezer for a couple hours.
I wouldn't really calling it 'watering down drinks'. It's more of a cool chill type of thing. I like ice cubes in my coke, a really nice icy cold cool taste.
That's why I don't order drinks in restaurants unless I can get an unopened cold can or bottle of, say, Coke or Sprite, and a glass with no ice. At home, DW and I keep our alcoholic beverages at room temp, with the exception of some wines and Kahula which we refrigerate as they are better chilled.
