Why do backlinks disappear in google's webmaster tools?

    i've noticed that whilst i continue to build up backlinks, occasionally backlink quantity will go down under some of the domains, even though they're high in PR and traffic and what not. anyone have any idea what this happens and if it effects the serps?

    Are you doing profile link building? If so, they'll get automatically deleted within 30 to 90 days unless the profile is active. that's why I don't use profile link building.
