I've got articleauthors on elance and as a service provider I can tell you that many overseas writers (ie-India) will write for $5 or less. It kills me since there is no way I can compete with that as I have to pay my writers a base for each article I send out. But on the other end of the spectrum is that I know there are many website owners who prefer to have someone based in the States right their article utilizing proper english..or americanized english. So it sort of pans out.

You can compete with quality. Quality is much more than simply ensuring proper English.

If solid writing was simply using proper grammar then everyone would be a star writer. :D

A few months ago, I purchased about 800 articles for Rupees 200 each. That was the best price I could get from India (I live in India) for moderate quality articles. Rupees 200 is very close to $5. I recently purchased about 2 dozen articles from lrrupert on DP for $5 each. lrrupert's quality was a shade better than the ones I got from my Indian vendor.

So, this is one area where the "Indian price advantage" did not work for me

Exactly, I am myself from India and I have seen ppl bidding for figures like USD $50 for 15 articles. Sometimes it can be even less.

Sometime you can get good writer(for this you have to see there past work). I think it depends on your requirements as well. If you want very pro work and u have lot's of money in your pocket than it is better to rely on states writers. If you want technical writing(I have writen some articles on web technologies for others) or small articles than you can rely on outsourcing job.

depends on the number of words, I mentioned $5 per article for a 300 words article - this is a fairly common price.

Seems like a simple concept to me... everyone specializes in their own field and does what they do best. :)

it's probably quite hard to make a website out of thin air for content writers, maybe we have all those crazy unique ideas for sites ... and they can write crazy content, so it works out.

Well, I do write stuff for my own websites. But, I love writing and my clients give me topics to write on where I can research and learn something new.

I guess that is why I write for others. I always wanted to be a writer and now I am. :)

My prices are on my website in my signature. I do not charge outlandish prices and I am in America. :)

Or you could do what I did and fuse the two together ;)

It seems to be working as there are a bunch of webmasters out there looking for original content.

It is comparatively easy than developing a site. Further writer gets instant money, continuous flow of money for work done. Site development requires complete development and time, money, energy.

A simple reason is that article writers need some stimulation on new topics, hence writing for others gives them that insight into new niches, don't believe that they don't write for their own sites on the side

Content is king but it is just one of hundreds of important factors for a successful site.
So, if you are very good at one factor, how can you cover the others?

If you think websites are such easy money you should spend sometime in the BST section and look at the all the sites selling for around $40. they usually have 4-5 articles 4-5x $5 = $20-$25 + domain name $10 + hosting/a few bucks a site is basically worthless until you do all the SEO and get some traffic.

Than after you spend hundreds of hours maybe thousands getting traffic messing with keywords adding more content you have to try to make money from it. And it is not as easy as just putting an google ad on it.

So mouths latter the website owner still probably hasn't made any money yet (and might never make any money) and the writer got paid a long time ago.
