Why directories?

I've noticed that a lot of webmasters here have a directory website, or maybe I'm wrong and directory owners just post a lot more than others :D. but what is it that makes directories so popular? Is it because it's easier to build, to attract visitors or have a high ranking in search engines?

All 3 of those plus Coop weight....The SEO perfect storm.

Although they aren't such a cinch as they once were due to oversaturation.

    I don't have one.... yet.

Waiting for the perfect script to float by. (Along with my boat).

Many reasons to have one. If you practice best practices and moderate efficiently, get a decent PR, and build it just right, you could have a decent, semi-automated, second business that generates traffic, money, and SE rankings.

That would be an ideal goal. But most just want it as a quick and dirty place to build links and co-op value.

I built one just to see what the fuss was all about.

Travel Directions is currently averaging $.23/day in revenue with 26 unique visitors a day.

It's not exactly one of my "winner" sites. :D

But it's a PR5, so it's a decent resource for webmasters in the travel industry.

I was originally just testing out a directory script for use elsewhere. Now it seems like I'm testing anything that interests me on the same site.
