Why did my website get a 20 fold increase in Google traffic?

Back in mid july one of my websites got a 20 fold increase in direct google.com traffic. This was a result of the sites SERPS having improved dramatically overnight.

This surge in traffic / SERPS lasted a fortnight - by 1 August, everything was back to the previous SERPS and traffic levels.

Why would this have happened? Anyone had a similar experience?

The site is about 18 months old. Google traffic had always been a poxy 10 hits a day until mid july - given the large boost in SERPS for a fortnight, I thought that I might have been released from the Sandbox. But SERPS are now back to where they were before.

No real changes were made to the site that could have lead to it's re-penalization.

Any ideas what might be happening?

Have a look through some of the google dance threads. A lot of people reported being for example #33 then #4 then up to #80 and then back to #33 all with a couple days. The big G is testing something as it has a lot off site bouncing around and a lot of PR fluctuations. Give it sometime some will figure out what there new method is or what they are testing.

I have a totally free stuff website, which got a similar serp in the very first month of its launch.. its general unique visits is around 75 but in that fortnight, the count reached to even 400 which way really a honeymoon moment for my site..

but it stayed for as long as the honeymoon stays.. n now again it is around 100 or so!!

I'd do some checking to see if your site is on the edge of a penalty. If your site is 18 months old you should be getting a lot more than 10 hits a day. Especially if you have a lot of unique content. I'm guessing that you're right at the edge of a penalty and google tweaked the knobs just enough that you came out of it...then turned them back and you fell back in. By making a few changes you might be able to get out for good.

it can happen from time to time and to be honest i don't think anyone can give you a qualified answer as to why. However I find that continually building back links to my site helps to stabilise out this effect to some extent and boost my SERPS rankings
