    They saw an opportunity to make money. They have resources to throw and tried to get a piece of the pie. They may not be close to Google, but at least they provide an alternative.

    One important rule in business - you need to spend money to make money.

    Definitely microsoft wanted to make money from the paid advertisement just like Google, and wanted to get more popularity by staying among people's mind through providing search engine.... basically it's idea was for marketing themselves and making money

    from business perspective i can say that it is just business expansion. as they have resource and there is a potential market they just tried to grab a market share and they are doing well.

    I think this was the need of time, bcz search engine is not just like a word its a huge business/game and to remain in the competition in all technologies, they develop the bing for grown up in web world not doubt they are less than google but still they are growing up and developing their technologies.

    Well, Microsoft and Google both created their search engines in the same year: 1998. Yes, you read that right, 1998. Bing was originally referred to as MSN or the Microsoft Network.

    when your big like Microsoft, basically anything you make will be somehow successful. just gotta keep making things until something catches and becomes big, cause if something becomes big for these companies, its really big :)
