Because it's infra red - the wavelength is too long to be detected by your eyes. You can however see the beam using a digital camera - simply point it at your camera, press a button on your remote, wave it around slightly and look at the image shown on the screen (cue a surge of people reaching for their TV remotes and digital cameras).
