Why cant I private registration on .us domain?

I have registered a .us domain and I want to use Godaddy Private Registration to remove my Whois information from it but its not an option.

The domain is useless if I cant. Is this because of the nexus agreement thing?

    Thanks.

The US registry does not allow private registration. They want to ensure that only qualified registrants have US domains ...coupled with some post 9-11 concerns. You can use a PO Box for privacy.

What does that have to do with owning a domain name?

I think its called the Nexus Agreement or something like that. Atleast I remember reading about it several months ago.

Its used to ensure that, as the last poster said, only qualified people own a .us domain. I dont know why the 911 would have an impact but anyway. :)

I guess they just do not want terrorists to own a .us domain name and hide behind the whois privacy. The US have control over it so they can pretty much do anything they want with it.

Obviously the terrorists are hell bent on registering .us domains, and turning them in to recruitment websites...

So true, hence it's not possible enable privacy on US domains but P.O. Boxes do the trick if you qualify for this extension ;)
