I have been writing articles for quite a long while now. And every so often I write one specifically to get a good SERP. Usually within a short while the article will appear at either the 2nd or 3rd position on Google, for my chosen keyword. Problem is it never stays there for very long. My site is regularly updated so the site doesn't go stale. What could be the reason for my site dropping its SERP, usually quite quickly (within a week or 2) Site is www.thethoughts.co.uk/thoughts Thanks
Other than the usual backlinks issue, it's probably because your site is a blog, with an RSS feed. The RSS feed sets up relevant anchor text for your latest posts, and looking at your current one it goes back to about 3 weeks ago.
Ok thanks for the replies. Obelia - I am not sure what you mean about the RSS feed. Does having the RSS cause problem with Google? Or do I just have it configured incorrectly?
Google shows about 26, but I know there are more than that - but for some reason the others don't show in Google Webmasters tools...
No, they never do - I've got 3000+ for one site but Google only shows 4. Google webtools doesn't show them all either. Twelfty
To maintain your SERP, you will need a strong amount of relevant inbound links.. Try to analyze your top competitors and see where are their links come from
Ok thanks for the suggestions. Sometimes it seems like it is so much hard work to generate web-traffic.
No, it's fine, and you have it done right. What I'm saying is that the RSS feed is causing a temporary boost for your most recent pages.
Ahh I see. That makes sense now then. As for the backlinks. Is there anyway of actually calculating how many I have? Obviously Google doesn't show them all as twelfty mentioned...
try search around in forum. there are many backlink tools people sugget you to use. try use all of them and see average of backlinks you got. dont trust any particular one.
if your site is of a perticular niche it is easy to maintain the SERPs! take about 20 keywords that you use in your articles, use most common ones that is included in almost every article. then just use those keywords as anchor text and hiperlink them to your homepage. that way, you can optimize those keywords. then it will be lot easier for your site to do well in the SERPs!
Exactly. One need required amount of backlinks too to maintain the position. One of my site went straight up there on 3rd position for a particular keyword and its has been there for 3 months now. Never dropped a place. Because I have built enough backlinks for it and my competitors just don't have more relevancy and backlinks together to dislodge me.
This is great information. Thanks for this - it will really give me some help now with sorting this out...
I usually just use Yahoo to keep a tab on my backlinks. Using a couple of different tools and taking the average as is mentioned here doesn't seem like a bad idea though.
