There is a color threshold, so if your text colors get too close to the background then adsense defaults to either black or white. I had this happen on one of my placements I switched from YPN recently. YPN had no trouble with the contrast, but yahoo defaulted the text to white because it felt it was too close to the background color.
Yup, try lightening the background a bit and making the links stand out more, then they should be able to work.
