I am not the smartest guy in town but can't Dmoz earn some type of revenue and employee a staff? I know it may go against the whole concept of the "peoples project" it was born as but it has grown to be so much more. In light of all the issues they have had over the years I think converting dmoz to a business model would elevate the integrity, performance and reliability of the site/service.
Because its Business Model was designed that way and it has been very successful for that very reason. The culture they built is to provide a motive that is higher than monetry value for their reviewers, hence the name "The Largest Human Edited Directory"
It would need a very large staff to replace its volunteers who spend hours for free, cos many of us would walk. But why do you want to create another Best of the Web? You can get listed there if you pay. One last comment, the only people it would please is web site owners, why should over 7,000 people want to give up their hobby to please site owners when we have consistently said the model we work is for end users and we have no interest in any value a listing might give to a site?
