why build links?

i sorry that if i had asked a very primitive question, but just wanted to pretty clear with it.

I met an SEO expert and he said that with the web growing fast, link building is almost dead and carries no value. He adds that Google does not recognize links anymore unless its from a very trusted source. All he adviced me was to write useful content. Its his view.

I myself tried some link building not really helped me. Of course it worked for PR but not for traffic or search rankings.

    what are your views?

Rubbish! Many links are devalued. However, Google's algorithm is clearly based on links. The problem is, few use their links properly. Links have value if placed on PR sites in keyword-rich anchors. I just watched my main SERP go from 465 to 25-30 in a week with just a couple hundred links pointing with those words.

I think quality links help a lot, mostly for PR but if you want some visits just buy some links in related websites with traffic.
