You know, I think that when we say "Should we really have to upgrade our hardware for a new OS that doesn't provide a lot more features than the previous OS?", I think what we're trying to say that we want "Features". Performance increases should not be labeled as a feature. When a new version of Mac OS is released, does it say "4x faster than the previous version!" on the home page? No. It says things like Time Machine, Cover Flow, Front Row, Stacks etc. Take a look - http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html What does Microsoft say? Take a look - http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/features/default.mspx It's funny how Microsoft and all it's fan-boys always says Vista is faster. Why is that? Because it's got nothing else going for it!
I've noticed people are saying that Vista is fine when you've got lots of Giga bytes and tons of Hard Disk space to play with, however what troubles me is how Vista is sold. For example you can get a yourself a computer for a couple of hundred dollars and it'll come with Vista, however it's got something like 512Mb and a small Hard Disk to go with it - so in other words Vista is being sold with a "BASIC" computer system - there's nothing "old" about that system, it's just being sold cheap - perhaps there's a market for Students to have computers nowadays for school and a cheap computer is what they need. The problem I instantly see there is that computer is being sold with Vista and like many people, they cannot be bothered to install their own Operating System onto that computer - why would they?, they only want a computer to do their work on and perhaps do a bit of Internet & games. For a cheap Computer system like that Windows XP is still an ideal system to have and I just don't comprehend why the lower end of the computer market is being sold with Pre-Installed Vista!
One of feature that included in windows vista, UAC or user account control make me annoyed when I targeted to finish my working. It gives me window that need to be clicked and clicked. That's why i disable this feature. And the other thing that make me disappointed is it can't run as fast as xp.
I haven't had any issues with Vista yet... I'm running a: Custom Build- 2.9 GH Intell processor 1 GB DDR2 800 Ram 160 GB SATA Raid 1 256 MB Video Card Windows Vista Ultimate (Free Copy for attending a MS event) Office 2007 (Another MS Event) Various older programs Numerous games including Civ 4 (Civ 4 did require a patch to run correctly) I only had to install 1 driver, and it was for a USB wireless network card.
I used Vista for the first time in anger yesterday after my sister-in-law said she was having problems with her laptop. The main problem was that it was infected with loads of virus's - the exact same virus's that affect XP! ...I thought there were security improvements with Vista? After running CCleaner and AVG (McAfee was installed but was saying that it wouldn't clean up anymore threats until the subscription had been renewed - terrible!) there is still a problem with the machine. Whenever I try to enable the Windows firewall I get an error saying that the Rundll (?) wont run... this means that I also can't access the control panel... Also I kept getting pop-up messages from Vista saying that I had to allow CCleaner and AVG to run - this happened constantly! Very annoying and unnecessary! All this effort has made me even more determined to buy Linux next time round
Actually I agree, those pop ups are pretty annoying BUT I found out yesterday that you can shut them off so you never have to see one again
i concur. there was one point in the spring when i went on 3 months without having to reboot on vista. i think i finally had to when i installed something that required a reboot. vista is based off of Windows 2003 server which corporations use for file sharing, exchange mail, print and web servers. i know, and actually use windows 2003 server at work. it's also more secure. there are utilities on the web like EBCD that you can use to get passed the XP password and login - doesn't work on vista. believe me, the upgrades are not just cosmetic.
If you have a fast computer then restarting isnt too bad... my laptop takes a few min to restart and asks tons of ?'s but my new computer restarts really fast, I built it and installed Vista so I had to restart like 100 times for all the chipset and other drivers, if the computer was slow that would have been a lot worse then it was.
Yeah. I think thats it. Oh and yes the fact that XP is easier to crack. Myself, I am running 32 bit Vista Ultimate on.... AMD x64 Dual Core - 2.00GHZ 4Gb Ram 2Gb Graphics Card Twin 19inch Monitors 500 GB Sata drive I also run a partitioned 25GB swap disk and my cpu is rarely 50% and ram goes to 75% on the odd occasion if I am doing any 3d rendering. I am a serious professional multi tasker and it runs great for me. Going back to XP would be like going back to Windows 98.
It runs badly on every computer that is owned by someone who does more with it than using MS Office. For example, explorer.exe stops responding everytime i try to delete something - and also sometimes when I right click. This with their "regular updates" running. I'm beginning to get scared of what might be in those updates...aren't you?
I quite liked it before I bought two new hard drives to install. Vista doesn't recognise them and needs drivers, it's a nightmare. I was told to format and reinstall and this MIGHT solve the problem. That's Vista...
I quit using Microsoft during XP. I was a Mac guy until around 1996 when I moved to Windows... I stuck with Windows until around 2003, gradually introducing Linux and then switched to Linux maybe full time in 2005. I program a lot and Linux is much easier to program. You have way more control and it's a lot more transparent. Even killing a process is so much easier on Linux. It's a lot more lightweight and the user interface has gotten so much better in the past 5 years. Main disadvantages: 1.) First 2 to 3 months are a pain until you get used to it 2.) Lack of support for games Everything else I need I have and it's super stable and fast. Oh yeah and FREE.
