I recently purchased a PSU, it has 2 of those 4pin connectors, on the site i purchased it from one of the 4pin connectors is called +12V MB and white in color, the other is called +12V and its blue in color. Then there is the usual (larger) ATX connector. My question is why are there two of the 12V 4pin connectors, would it be additional just for motherboards that have 2 locations for 4pin connectors?
The extra 4 pic 12v connector is for Xtreme CPU, that needs extra juice from PSU (core i7 extreme for example) Larger ATX connector? Isn't it standard 20 + 4 pin ATX connector? Are you sure you bought the correct PSU for your PC? What is the make and model of it? If you can post the picture of you PSU, it will help in identifying the connectors, if possible post a closeup of connectors.
Thanks The Webby, that explains the extra 4 pin 12V. Heres the PSU that i purchased http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=247600&Tab=0&NoMapp=0 There are 15 large images of it including its connectors. The make is TAURUSX, i have that 430W model. My motherboard has 24pin socket for ATX http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=517566&CatId=0 but just 20pin on PSU connector.
Ahh okay.. The White 4 pin connector (With Yellow, Orange, Red and Black wires) is 4 pin ATX extension. It should go with the 20 pin large ATX connector. The blue one (With 2 Yellow and 2 Black wires) is for CPU, you will find a CPU 4 pin socket somewhere near the processor socket. The white 4 pin connector has a latch on one of it's sides, if you try to slide it to the 20 pin connector, it should lock with that. See the attached image for a little guideline on what connector goes where.
Hi The Webby, thanks very much for explaining and providing the image, its very helpful, i now have them all in the appropriate sockets with your help, this morning i was beginning to worry as i read on a site that it was ok to have a 20pin connector in a 24pin socket but that it can put a strain on those pins http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#20into24 and a couple of days ago i had tried connecting The White 4 pin connector (With Yellow, Orange, Red and Black wires) and was scared to push down on it thinking it wouldn't go and wasn't meant to go there. After reading what you mentioned about the white 4 pin connector having a latch and locking in place and having just done that i just breathed a sigh of relief. I thought i was going to have to buy a different PSU, thanks very much for your help, i very much appreciate it.
Glad to help mate.. That's why we all are here, to share the knowledge.. First time building a PC yourself? Its quite fascinating, putting everything together.. Good luck with your built, don't forget to post a picture of it, when it's complete.
Only the second time for me building one myself but the last one that i did was literally about 8 years ago so ive got a little nervous about it but have enjoyed selecting the parts and putting it together, i agree its fascinating and very satisfying and nice to know exactly what has gone inside. I will definitely get a pic or two posted.
