I know that Google targets their searches around IP location, cookies, etc.. But why are the results SO drastically different than Yahoo, Bing, etc. What else contributes to the differences?
Every search engine have their different type of algorithm to rank any page or website. But I always prefer google results, google consider so many advance algorithm now a days & they frequently update their policy. Because all 3 are different search engines and have their own terms and condition for indexing. As well as their own algo for indexing which differ from others. That's why the result is different.

I understand all search engines have different algorithms. Its just that for a given search.. Yahoo and Bing are typically VERY similar if not exact. Google is VASTLY different. I am just trying to understand some of the SEO items that are preferred by Google's search (vs. Yahoo/Bing).
There are many differences between them. Thy have different algorithms for ranking, different SEO items, they are diferrent companies and they have different terms and conditions of operations.

Google is different from Yahoo and Bing because they do not use the same code. They all have their own custom made algorithms. Google tends to change their algorithms a lot in my opinion, either by tweaking it or adding new layers to it. It is a dance and you need to master it.
In my opinion they are: 1. Really fast indexing 2. Simplicity 3. Large indexed websites Overall its got lot of loyal visitors, i too am a google addict - dont know to explain though!! cheers Josh

I don't think you understood the question. The question was why are Yahoo & Bing similar to each other, but different from Google. All 3 are different companies, but there are far more similiarities between Y & B.
