Why are the backlinks to my website decreasing?

    Hello
I need some advice on back links.
I started a website and after couple of months i got 430 back links pointing to my website (according to web grader and yahoo). After couple of weeks when i stopped working on the website back linking, it decreased to 280 and after couple of weeks to 140.
Now it is stable at 140 and does not increase or decrease. Can any one tell me why my back links have been decreasing?

    Thanks

this may be due to where you submitted the links, for example some blogs have a widget that posts your comment, name and url on most pages of the blog, so you comment on one page and in theory get 10 backlinks from that site due to the widget, now over a period of a week or 2 your comments will be replaced by others hence the drop in backlinks. The same goes for some article directories.

One thing is for sure, DO NOT STOP! Keep building backlinks and use site explorer as this is the most reliable source.

As geester1 said, where the links were placed will be the main factor. Some backlinks may be dropped from either a quality point of view, or the pages they were on are de indexed. Another thing to remember, is the back link checking tools (inc Y!) seldom tell the whole truth about your numbers of backlinks.
Keep link building, you'll get there!

Counted Backlink numbers fluctuate often, especially when it is a higher count (1000+). In order to report a number to you in a timely manor, backlink counting tools will often give you an estimated or rounded number based on search results. It is true that lower quality links do get dropped from the results as they age. Keep building your backlinks, just aim for higher quality ones.

yeah the first factor is the above one and secondly some site offering submission of backlinks have defined expiry of backlinks i.e your back link will be removed say after one or two week so in this sense this is a continous procedure

blogs are notorious for swollowing up backlinks into its archetecture. Also - you might be adding backlinks from a site that is removing some of their pages w/ your link on them.
