Why are so many young people (including athletes) having heart attacks?

This kinda concerns me since back in the 80's and 90's only 50 - 60 year old people would have heart attacks. Now it seems that 20 year olds younger than me are dying from natural causes. Is it because they are doing drugs? They never go into the details as to what caused the death, they just say that they died from a heart attack so I wonder if these young athletic people are dying from drugs and alcohol. It also worries me since the doctor says I have high blood pressure but it is really hard to keep it normal.

well a combination of poor diet and high stress in life i bet.

but eventually most of us will die from cardiac arrest

diet, and exercise , is the one of the best thinsg, and if you can take a daily aspirin like bayer it is good to keep blood pressure low as it thins your blood slightly

They are way more fater than the last generation. The new generation is more lazy and eats more sweets and pop. And it has the internet to spend hours on.

I think it's more likely diet and lack of exercise than stress levels that are contributing to more and more younger people getting heart attacks compared to, say, 10 or 20 years ago. Stress is stress, I don't think the present generation is experiencing more stress than the previous one. But eating habits have drastically changed over the decades. Nowadays, you seldom hear about people worrying about a balanced meal; they just eat what's readily available at the fastfood joints. And as civilization progresses and makes life easier for everyone, the tendency is for people to adapt a sedentary lifestyle. Face it people, we are a generation of couch potatoes with tickers beating on borrowed time. :p

I don't think it's just diet and exercise since many athletes are susceptible as well. Maybe it's just that the press is focusing more on their deaths than they did 20 years ago?

I suppose that's possible being highly visible more so today than 20 years ago.

First thing that came to mind in the case of athlete's, supplements and the like. Not saying they are evil just you never know what they are taking in attempts to retain that competitive edge.

Jobs today are less physical. Like me, what I do all day is work behind a PC and no exercise at all. Also, eating foods with cholesterol could be a reason.

I am wondering does stress also equal being "mentally focused"? I know what stress is when it feels like I want to pull out my hair, but when I am not stressing I am focused on programming and other mental challenges so I wonder if that too is considered stress? I really cannot take a break since things will go downhill I can honestly say that I have worked on my sites every single day for five years straight.

I think it is fatter in a lot of cases, not to mention food quality.

What did mom cook 20 years ago - homemade casserole with fresh ingredients.
What does mom cook today: 12minute microwave meal load with enough preservatives to keep 7lbs of beef in a 80 degree room for 4 days from spoiling.

    Lifestyle has changed dramatically too.

IN MY DAY we didn't have these fancy remote controls...we actually had to get off the couch to change the channel!!!

Not to mention transportation. How many kids today walk anywhere? No, they ride their scooters and sneakers that are also rollerblades :p :p

    Here's one reason: http://www.cardiomyopathy.org/html/which_card_hcm.htm.

And everything is in the media these days, even if it happens in some remote place. But I'd be suprised if there were any true increase in the rate of young people just dropping dead from heath attacks from 50 years ago.
