Why are porn sites not allowed to dispaly adsense?

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by ian_batten, Sep 26, 2007.

Just wondering why porn sites are not allowed to display adsense ads.
If you do a search for a pornographic term, the adsense on the google page display loads of different porn sites.
So, clearly adwords accepts advertisers to sign up, and advertise pornographic content.
So, why is it that publishers cannot display the pornographic ads, by google can?

In characteristic Google fashion it's a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'.
They do exactly the same with link sales.

My guess is that porn browsers are generally low quality traffic that don't convert very well and there are a lot of them. The advertisers wouldn't get a lot from their money. And Google wants to try to keep up its good image.

    Just my two cents.

Google can't regulate whether porn ads are being displayed on sites accessed by children or not.

With googles family filter turned on, none of those ads will show up.

It is a liability and morality thing for google. There are also has some monetary factors as to why google doesn't, there is tons of fraud in the industry, and there are a lot of shady sites that do illegal things with users info and money.

It's part of their "Do no evil" policy. Allowing adsense on porn sites encourages people to make more porn sites, which Google doesn't want to look like it's doing. So yes Google is being hypocritical, but when you're that big you can do whatever you want.

    look at it like this.

Lets say you advertise something on Google AdSense(using AdWords) contextually with keywords.

    Lets say keyword "shag".

Shag could be slang for sex,
Shag could also be high quality shag's ie carpets and mats.

So as a reputable company do you want your product being advertised beside pornographic material? Also ads displayed on a page can have an affilation with the content, so shag carpets on a pornographic site, are they erotic carpets?

Can you imagine how that company would feel espically if they were a family based company that were uber christian?

I wouldn't think it would be good for Google's reputation if they were displaying their ads on porn sites.

It doesn't really make a difference, the adsense on the google search page when you carry out a porn search has "Sponsored Links" next to them, which is clearly indicating that google are serving those ads.
But I can certainly see how google want to keep a clean image.

The answer is because Google sucks.............who cares about morality, or image, porn is a billion dollar industry. Google is crappy for not supporting it with Adsense.

Their main reason of not allowing adult sites has to do with revenue, pure and simple. Everything boils down to cash. The adult industry has a track record that's riddled with click fraud, so it's more of a business decision on their behalf rather than an "ethical", or moral one. On a personal note, I feel they should allow it, but in a way that would separate the adult ads from the "normal" advertisers. Adbrite did this when they developed AVNads. They would just have to beef up the the technology even more, to reduce the amount of click fraud that would occur.

Simple... Adsense is the extention of adwords. Since Google doesn't take porn ads in adwords, so question doesn't arise.

    Most Porn site webmasters cheat.

They use cloaking programs to tell the Google-bot the topic of their website is something else than porn.

The cloaking programs generate thousands of pages on other topics, but the visitor gets to see the real pages, which are the porn-sites.

Apparently the Google bots can still be mislead, because there are still thousands using these cloaking applications...

Why Google allows porn-sites to be indexed I don't know.

I agree that it is confusing. If it had something to do with ethics than they should allow to advertise for porn too, but they don't...

    Google's hypocrisy knows no bounds.

    "Do no evil" ???

what about all the violent video clips (child bullying, beatings, gun crime glorification, etc) that appear regularly on YouTube ?

Google has the power to remove these, but chooses not to.

Their ethics are beneath contempt, in my opinion.
