Why are old domains worth so much money?

I am wondering why domains that are old get value just from being old even if there is no pr/traffic/revenue.

I guess it's because domain's age is believed to be one of the many factors taken into account to determine ranking, and older it is, better it's supposed to be.
Some peoples think the domain's age isn't as important as the link's age to the site.

Yes, domain age is an important factor taken by consideration by search engines. Older domain names are considered to be "authority" sites on a subject an are ranked higher.

But the question is... what constitues "age". As far as I know... if an old domain is dropped and picked up... that's the new registration date. Are the engines smart enough to look for past content or do they just go off of registration date?

Bottom line... if you are going to buy an "old" domain... find out what the reg date actually is.

Intersting point of view , actually domain names that are older are not filtered like sandbox executions , thats what i could say but dont konw about the problem you discussed :) But would like to learn it.

what if you totally changed a domain usage? Like a domain had been a lyric site for 8 years and you turn it to a myspace layout site...

    Answer

A Domain's age matters because of the fact that the age is believed to have an influence on the search engine positioning and Pagerank determination. If a domain name is dropped and picked up again, the age is lost as well. Also old domains have traffic also sometimes, so that is one more thing. But not as considerable.

To profit off an old domain, include its registration date when you sell it, and emphasize on it, that will have you a lot of extra money on the sale of the domain

It all comes to SERPS. Domain age is considered as a major factor which affects your positions. Even the sandbox prooves it. '

To profit with the age of the domain dont forget to mention it when you are selling it. However I would not buy a domain simply because its old. This would only be beneficial but not critical for my decision.

The most important and key factor which determines a domain's price is the amount of type-in traffic you receive. Its like buying a plot of land in a city. Having more type in traffic is the same as having a greater stream of people going through your store without any advertising, simply because of the good location.

    Cheers.

there are 5 factors when a domain name is appraised as it says on www.hostmywebsitenow.com

click on "domain names" then "domain name appraisals"

    Quote:

    commercial use,brand recognition, name length,dot value,hyphen/numberic,world count.
(i don't have any idea what this all means but that's what it says at the site)

I have had my personal domain name appraised there and it's worth $30.lol. that's more than i payed for it. lol. at least if i sell it i could sell it for more.lol
