Why are my rivals higher than me in Google?

I set up my company web site about a year ago and have been gradually trying to force my way up the rankings. My question is this:

My company trains computer software and if I do a search for, say, 'quark training london' the same names keep appearing at the top of the rankings (I'm not going to name names, so to speak).

If I examine the site that comes #1 in Google for this search term I discover that it has no back links (the company in question is www.u**q.co.uk).

How are they managing to get so high in Google without back links?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Just did a search on google for 'quark training london' to have a look.

I believe the reason your competitor is getting #1 is purely that the keyword phrase is not that compeitive. So they wouldn't need that many backlinks to get their site/page to top of the ranking.

Try building backlings to your site with the anchor text 'quark training london' and I'm sure you will have no problems beating them for that particular term.

if you check the backlinks, you can find some wrong results. G does not shows the real backlinks. you can use yahoo to check the real backlinks.

and i can not make any comment your site and that site. there are too many criterias for serp

Always check backlinks from Yahoo explorer rather than Google for the reason stated by trichnosis.

Anchor text are words that are enclosed by the anchor link, for example:

    <a href="http://www.mydomain.com">This is the anchor text</a>
    Code (markup):

Anchor text helps you with your ranking (keyword positions) in search engine results pages (SERPS) for the keywords you are targeting. For your website you may want to try and build links with the following anchor text:

    <a href="http://www.europatraining.co.uk">Quark Training Courses</a>

    Evident Directory

a cool tool is backlinkwatch.com - it will tell you the links, the page rank of those links, the anchor text, whether "no follow" is being used, the number of outbound links and it is all FREE !!!!
