I'm not sure if this is the right section, but let me continue. I'm being offered web hosting with three plans. They're all basically the same, except the cheapest offers 1 dedicated IP, the one in the middle 8, and the other one 16. I know what are IP adresses, I just don't know why they are useful on shared web hosting. I want to host multiple websites on the same server. Is that the use of multiple IP's? Thanks.
Loosely speaking, you may have any number of virtual servers on a given IP, but only one server per IP may hold a certificate for ssl. Each secure domain must have its own IP address. For example, I don't pay for a dedicated IP. Secure connections[1] to my site are on my host's certificate, which, of course, does not match my domain. A warning is triggered by my browser, and I have to explicitly accept the certificate. If you plan on having secure (https) pages facing your customers, get enough lines to cover each domain using ssl. cheers, gary [1] C-panel, pop3, etc..
So let's say I'm going to have around 8 websites on the same SHARED server, but only one of them is going to be secure. Then one with only 1 dedicated IP isn't enough? What if none of them will be secured, it's 1 IP enough? Thanks,
If you only have one secure site (server), you only need one IP address. You can still have all the virtual servers you want on that same host machine. cheers, gary
