Why are I PHONEs locked up to only AT&T??

    why is the I PHONE locked up to only AT&T?? did AT&T provide funds for its development or is there some agreement that the Apple and AT&T have???

    AT&T have bought the distribution rights to the iphone till june of this year..

    The iphone is not that special anyways...atleastt i dont like it..

    Apple has teamed up with specific mobile providers in Europe as well.

    why does Apple have to sell the distribution rights to one company yet it can make more money when the I Phone is open to any carrier??

    What makes you think Apple will benefit from making the iPhone open to any carrier. In order to do that, they must support each carriers network. Sticking with AT&T's EDGE network is simple. Not to mention they actually get a monthly share of revenue from each AT&T customer.

    Besides, Apple is still making money from people who are unlocking iPhones to use with other carriers. While at the same time, Apple doesn't have to provide support for these users.

    i read some articles about the I Phone and discovered that AT&T paid some money for the production of the Phone. so that explains why it was given rights to distribute the phone in the US.
