Why are directories still being created, when anything post DMOZ is inadequate?

A directory in cahoots with a SE not ranking top for general categories.... Sounds a little far-fetched ;P

What are you hoping to achieve with this thread? It's clear that you are a fan of DMOZ.

It saddens me every time someone starts a thread like this one. Just because there's someone out there who did something first or is well-known doesn't mean that there are not others who have something of value to offer.

This is again a thread based on a lack of knowledge. There are directories owned by people on this forum that outrank DMOZ in the SERPs for many of their categories. There are directories that are sending the sites listed traffic. Many directories spend a great deal of time and money to maintain their category relevancies. Many are quite popular and well-known among their target audience.

I have never, for even a moment, considered DMOZ my competition.

    agreed!

i have seen loads of these threads since the time i joined here, but never really understood the OP,.... why are these question asked?

you wanna run a directory... run it,.... dont like directories, go some place else? why post such a question at all!!!

but to answer u, i would ask you a counter question!

why do you guys have loads of "around the corner" burger/ hotdog joints when u have joints like McDonalds and Pizza-hut all over the place (clean and healthy food)!
isnt the objective to eat healthy food!

But only people who eat there will tell you that the joint around the corner have the right sauses and gr8 taste!

no doubt DMoz has all it has, but so does the "round the corner" directories have all they have,... the newones yes doubtful... but there are better one too! and then many who were started off as a money spinners but later owners get passionate and a gr8 directory is born!

    as simple as that!

More of the robust flavorful response type I was hoping to receive! Replys with passion and zeal~

but sadly... in all this time i've yet to see the aforementioned statement proved throughout the duration of this thread "...There are directories that are sending the sites listed traffic. Many directories spend a great deal of time and money to maintain their category relevancies. Many are quite popular and well-known among their target audience....."

As the 4rth+ member connected to or owner of a directory, it seems like i've finally begun to attract the right attention and get some ideal feedback.
The "spin off burger joint 'round the corner" analogy was as good as it gets.
But that burger join in the same respects.... is undoubtedly no competitor for googles "McDonalds"
Unless anyone else can provide feedback of this metaphoric calibur... My job is done and curiosity quelled.

    My personal thoughts only :)

For traffic ive never expected traffic from them, up until this time last year i thought of pr from them, until algo changes.

If edited well, then pretty decent relevance.

    Seniority - no comment

Ive never desired popularity, nor with my sites, id rather them be successful, some huge successes as people and businesses are reclusive and unknown to large majorities.

Popularity brings jealousy, on top only has one way to go, down.

With constant algo changes, todays fantastic new thing can become tomorrows disaster, some types of businesses instead just remain steady and stick around regardless of being known or not. :)

We need other directories because, site gets backlinks and those backlinks support to increase keyword ranking in search engines.
    Site gets popularity from backlinks.
    Site gets page rank.
    Site gets traffic from directories.
some more factors are available for that.

You have to keep in mind that while we do like to help each other here, we are in some ways still competitors. There are many directories with top 10 rankings for topical search terms (things related to the category rather than directories). Some of those rankings can bring in a measurable amount of traffic to those categories.

I understand your asking for proof of what I said but it would not be in my own best interest to do so. There have been threads here in the past where folks have shared their successes in SEO but I don't plan on giving away my successful keywords on an open forum to simply prove a point.
