Why are directories Popular?

I have noticed on DP, that almost everyone has their own directory:rolleyes:
Is there any particular reason for this popularity? is it because it is easy to promote or monetize directories..? Or some other reason?
Directory owners, thanks for your help and time.:)

Some do it for the fun of it. Others for the money, there are tons of reasons. But directories are popular because of the links, pr and possible traffic they provide for your website. Plus it is one of the fastest ways to get your site indexed by the search engines.

Some directories have individual rankings for the categories, meaning that sites listed in the will get instant targetted traffic.

Well, I thought that directories never send traffic , they were only meant for better SEO, but these new directories coming up everyday, how are they helpful, I am sure they would neither send traffic nor good for SEO, because they are themselves not indexed in Google :)

Backlinks is the most important part of SEO today, while submitting to directories is the easiest way to get backlinks.

Most don´t send traffic, maybe 5 - 10 percent of the directories here actually do. Have you ever searched Google for a term and found a directory in there? It´s normally niche ones and a handful of good general ones. Some of us focus on the rankings more than PR. Of course most directory owners want PR, which happens to be the biggest selling point, whether it really helps the sites listed or not. But when you have actual rankings, IMO that is what makes a directory good. And useful beyond the PR ranking game.

Its only for money as all the directory owners first start their directory as free directory but when they have good amount of links in their directory they convert their directory into a paid one as they will get a lot more after turning into a paid one

This means, that the revenue from a directory just depends on its Page Rank?
Also, to get a Page Rank, first SEO the directory and then after you got a pr 6 (after spending hundreds or maybe thousands), you sell links for $10 or $15:confused: How can this be a profitable venture?

SEO is just creating search engine optimization pages

Yes if you spend $1000 as capital investment and then $200 monthly

I am sure that you will get more than this about $500-$600 monthly

The best examples arewww.alivedirectory.com and www.avivadirectory.com

They charge $34 for a regular listing

and probably they would get more about minimum of 30 submissions per month

    So calculate the income yourself!

Also you can ask Jeff(online dude) and chris hoffmann(mystikmedia) here

They can answer you more correctly

If you're concerned or care about your Alexa rankings, adding a directory to your site can take care of that.

Thanks for your information. Ok, I have $1000, can you advise how to spend it while promoting a directory.

How is ALexa related to directories? Forgive my ignorance.

    yearly subscription base payment.

getting your high PR + getting a few thousand listings = residual income.

it's a pretty clean cut and dry overview.

Thanks for the calculation. Looks logical.

So if want to make money, we should go to paid directory way?

Yes, that is the easiest way to monetize it. Probably, it is the only way, from whatever knowledge I have about directories- I know that they hardly earn anything from adsense and other similar programs.
