Why are aged domains more valuable?

Lets say I owned a valuable domain like poker.com and I just registered it today. Would the value of the domain be the same if it was owned for lets say 5 years? I don't get why age adds value to a domain name, I see users all the time posting there domain age trying to add value to a domain. Shouldn't it be the name, pagerank, and backlinks that determine the value of a domain, not the age. Am I missing something?

I have an old (7yo) domain. No content. Never really has had content. Alexa rank so low it isn't even available. Maybe 3 or 4 backlinks across the entire internet.

Its pagerank is 1 ... and with the new content I shoved on it a few days ago it ranks extremely well in google. I don't understand it, but I couldn't see the same happening on a brand new domain.

Has some SEO benefit (unless its banned), looks more reputable to other webmaster and has a nostalgic feeling to it :)

It's about credibility. Google assumes that if you've had the same domain name for 10 years, that you're not going to suddenly scam the next 100 visitors out of their money or give them a virus.

I do not think that the value of the domain name depends on the age. I suppose that mostly depends on the domain name itself.

It's one of the more worthless ranking metrics these days. I think most people seem to think that age = lots of backlinks but it's far from true in many cases.

The age of the domain is involved in how the Google bot will determine its ranking. At least that's what I read.

What if you own the aged domain for 5-10yrs but never put up a page, ever! Will it still rank well if you put out contents the next day? Just curious if the G bot checks registry history and give points to aged domain for nothing.

i think that the actual domain name helps as well. if you have a short name or a key word I would see that ranking better than having a very long meaningless domain registered for the same time duration as the short/keyword domain

Aged domain is a domain which has been used by others before. It means that if you buy an aged domain, you will benefit from the promotion that the former owner did.
