Read the TOS, read the plentyful threads here outlining the common mistakes, be sensible, dont click your own ads, dont request clicks, dont annoy anyone enough to do damage to your sites.

Like everyone else has said as far as following TOS, basically don't try to take shortcuts. I think this is why so many people get themselves in trouble. For certain sites, like building an authority site, it takes a certain amount of time to become a naturally trusted and high-traffic site.

I'd say the biggest shortcuts that cause the "why did I get banned" threads are:
traffic - don't get crap traffic just because it makes you feel good. get legal traffic that won't get you in trouble.

help from friends - don't let friends know about your site, or worse - don't ask anyone to help you out by clicking

site disclosure - there are a lot of good, knowledgeable people on this forum, but I grit my teeth whenever I see people start the "Look at my site and tell me what I can improve" threads. In spite of the good people here, like any big community, there are some not-so-good people. It's not very smart to go to people who are technically competing with you and ask how to improve what you're doing. It's like leaving your front door unlocked and putting a sign out in front of your house saying, "Please come in and give me advice on my decorating style"
