Why all the religious controversy?

So uh... what's up with the religious "stabs in the back" recently I've been hearing about, and all the discussion here on DP about it?

Religion's not my strong point (in debate, though I am very religious) - but I'm just wondering why we all need to fight (in debate) over them.

Can't we just accept the facts over them? I mean, yeah, the Pope mis-spoke something, not all Muslims are bad, and Christianity loves peace. So what's the point?

Is it possible to find a religion that's not involved in heated debate anymore? :(

Well, I can think of ONE... technically.

It's like the media, contraversy sells; not necessarily truth, but tension gets people's attention. What's more likely to arouse attention: a moderate conversation where there's conclusions or two people getting into a fight?

One wonders why Jerry Springer sells...simply some people are more interested in seeing destruction than creation.
