Why a Directory?

    Hi All,

I set up PHPld just to see how php & MySQL work together, just for the experience, as it were, and I am wondering what the benefits of owning a directory are?

The two obvious plusses are the number of potential links from recips, and the potential for charging per listing. And, of course, the goodwill that comes with being a good net citizen.

What other factors go into the decision to run one of these? Seems like a lot of work.

    Cheers.

    You are correct.

You are correct, again. It is ALOT of work. I am sure you have seen many "dead" directories around the web - you know, the ones that seem to not review listings anymore or are no longer properly maintained. Why? Because the webmaster didn't really know what he was getting into (all the work involved) when he started his directory.

seems like nowadays you are not a real webmaster if you don't have 2 or more directories :)
maybe dmoz should run some revenue sharing program to atract directory owners to work for the big one..because the use for all these many directories is just backlinks
