If you are under 20, keep working hard. Take it seriously and make it your #1 priority. You wouldn't believe the number of multi-millionaires under 30 that the web has created. If age means anything in this business, younger is better.

There are two parts to studying a degree - learning the tech stuff and learning how to think critically and creatively - I know which one I think is more important (hint: you can always pay someone to do the tech stuff)

I am 25 years old and an EX-spammer...among <spelling? other things.
Just the past few months I have been tinkering with SEO and I love it.
All of my websites were funded and paid for with spam money. I dont spam anymore and I am *STARTING* to make some decent money from adsense and other affiliates.

I used to make $500+ a week spamming but now I only make $100+ per week with adsense and affiliates, BUT it's legal and isnt going to make me end up in jail so its cool...

P.S. i really love this whole seo thing. the feeling i get when people actually come to my site out of their own free will is amazing, not sure why its so exciting to me but i think i would like to do this job forever.

Making money online through building websites and getting tons of visitors to them is very hard while still mantaining profitability. You can get lots of visitors quikly if you spend tons of money to get them or wait many many many years via word of mouth. I dont recommend it. You can make much more money offline like I do. I am selling stock market software. My my advertising is off line but i sill have a simple webite for updates and stuff.

See the problem with mking moeny online is that there is too mcuh comptation. People already have their favorite sites and you need literally hundereds of throusands or millions of visitors to really make good money. Or you need somethign really coppelling.

You are better off getting a degree and wiating till you are 30 to get a highpaying job. You an blow all these small time net hutlers out of the water. PHDs and Masters degrees are worth a lot more than some people here give credit to.

Well Ned, Lets put it this way,

Making online money is matter of creativity and simple understanding. if you are smart and creative in your ways to promote your business online if much easier to get more income online then offline IMHO. I have been in this business for say just over 2 years now. Initially i was not making any big mollah, but off late i have been touching 1k/month with in my country is good pay. This is part time though. I cant imagine if i had been doing it full time, i would have easily crossed 2k by now. But anyways, i dont want this to be my online source of income. I believe their should be always more then 2 income source at any time. Its upto you, which is your priority.

Regarding Masters/ PHD, well i am B.E in Elec. & Telecomm. Just a fresher, got any job for me ?:p

I believe, education is a must. Nothing beats that piece of paper....

Ned, dont you think your life would be better if you were your own boss? Im in my final year of uni, and I really hate it how everyone is all excited about going to work for investment banks and having to work from 8am till 8pm every day.

They are gonna earn £30k a year but why is that good? From where Im standing you are just selling your soul to the devil, you will be paying bills and working towards a promotion all your life...

Some people are happy with that, I am certainly not.

Interesting points, but I don't think there's too much competition; it depends on what market your in.

Promotion is everything online, you can have the best site resources in the world, but without promotion, noone will know about it (how many times have you heard that before?). That's why it pays to think about creative promotion techniques which your competition aren't doing, in my case anyway. I've made sites I've had no interest or knowledge in, purely on the basis that I had decent promotion ideas for a specific market.

Sure I could study for a decade, and hope that I land on a 6-figure job, but I'd rather not have a boss, a limited salary and an alarm time. In my head, jobs are what people do when they're not making enough money online, or they don't know how to.

I'm only 23, still fairly young, but started this website thing a couple months ago in my spare time as a hobby. as of right now, if you include opportunity cost, I have made no money, but since its a hobby, its great. anyway, I'm focusing on completing my last semester of college with a double major in finance and economics and then taking the CFA exam in june. need to know how to manage and invest the money you do make regardless of income source
