Indeed. I use whois.sc now. However, I too was hijacked from a different one. (not sure which, I used multiple ones). 3 domains that I checked were taken within 2 days after and set up a $100 price tag. (sadly enough, within that 2 day time-frame, I ended up creating banners and a few other things for it, 'offline'. Lesson learned, I guess).
This is dirty: Registrant: MetaPredict 87 East Green Street Suite 305 Pasadena, California 91105 United States Same thing just happened to me.
Yeah, I use whois from termnial and if the domain is available learned to buy it immediately. I got burned waiting until the next day as well, that's way too long in this game.
How come Whois.sc is known as DomainTool.com ??? Someone mentioned earlier that they were "hijacked" using DomainTool.com, then everyone says use Whois.sc They are one in the same! Pete
Mine was hijacked by GoDaddy. I (USED TO) only search for domain names through them because I would buy real quick. This time I didn't buy. I just find it funny that the same company bought it. I might give them a call to see what kind of company they are.
I have similar issues with GoDaddy, I check the domain and if it's available, it is, I register it, get a reply from Godaddy "Sorry this domain is no longer available" we will try to register it or give you a complete refund. DoH !
Who is the best "whois" service? Second question, how can I do this domain search from the terminal?!
whois.sc is now officially http://whois.domaintools.com/ . Thing is, many of us who have used it for so long still go to whois.sc and well it still works. I do domain lookups there and then register the domain a day or a week later. I never have to worry about that domain suddenly being registed by them or a 3rd party who pays for lists of domains searched in whois. Long story short, use whois.sc
Yep, Ive had a customer complain about that very practice to me a few times, I doubted that it was true and just thought that he had a bad case of paranoia, it would seem he was right BIG BROTHER IS INDEED WATCHING... lol :0
one of those turds got me too. then i started using go daddy and registering right away if it was available. now i hear go daddy does it too? yuck.
Years ago Network Solutions did this when it was a monopoly. Well, maybe not company endorsed but definitely an inside job. Fortunately I caught on and had my credit card handy anytime I was looking to buy a name. Network Solutions cleaned up its act and is safe to use to check for availability.
Better to use http://dynadot.com for whois search. The query is real time and Dynadot is very safe, so no need to worry about spying
You do know they've admitted to selling searches to third party providers, right? Domaintools and whoi.sc are the same people... it's just a forward. Long story short, use Dynadot to do your searches, as suggested above.
