Whois protection?

When you register domains, do you buy whois guard/protection as well?

Some registrars offer it for free, and when there is such a promo, I take advantage of it. But otherwise, I don't really bother to pay extra for this service. I know my address and email are open for public viewing (and spam), but I am too stingy to pay for it, I guess. :p

My chief worry as a domain name purchaser is will I be able to transfer domain name to another registrar. I have read where some have had problems. The registrars I have used do not offer free private registrations. It is not worth my while to pay for the private when contact info on site leads right back to me.

It really depends on how much money I have the time. If I have the extra money I go head a buy the protection.

I've found it useless. Just caused problems for me. If someone was really out to find you...a WHOIS protection wouldn't stop them.

As well, it can cause issues when you register with some ad networks as well, as they need to know you own that domain.

How about the risk of having email spam, and sometimes real mail spam?

I know registrars offer it so that it is to protect your identity but what reputable business would want to hide that information? In a time when there are alot of fly by nighters out there people who can not see those sorts of details may not purchase from you.

That's true, if you have a company and you are using your business address and phone number, however there are lots of people with domains just for personal use, and might want to protect their home address and phone number.

I wouldn't use private registrations, even if it were free.

But you can't do that in your whois info, your email would be invalid. And even if that was accepted by the system, then you won't be able to receive the notices that the registrar might be sending.

I know with Go Daddy right now it is like 11.00 or so for a com domain with privacy... And I think you still get a 10% discount on that too so probably $10.00 on both.

I think 1and1 offers privacy protection for free when you register with them.

My concern with it is you give up some control of your domain when using it.

    On second thought.

I suggest you use it. Or at least lie on your WHOIS record...like everyone else apparently does :p

Ahh, but ICANN can take back your domain if they found out you were lying on your whois info, at least if somebody reports you.

Well....my personal safety over anything. It's got my hosts info on it, so that should be fine. That was the default anyways

Ahh, yeah a lot of people use their host's info, and I guess that's okay too. But how about the email address listed?

use a web-based email address (or an email address which you are not going to use much) because you are sure to get a lot of spam
