Hi, I'm considering to register my first .com/.net domains. However, I'm a little bit worried about exposing my private info in the whois. I did some forum searches and found this thread but it couldn't explain to me what I wanted to know. What are the general quide lines and best practices for this? Addresses, emails, phoumbers, etc. Should I come up with a free gmail account for email? What about my telephone number, I have only one cellphone and I'd rather not expose its number.. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the replies. I know that there are companies out there who offer all sorts of "privacy" features. My question (badly formulated, though. Sorry for that.) is really: In case one cannot/doesn't want to use those, what is a good way to fill in that information in the whois data? Do you use real addresses/telephone numbers, do you use separate email accounts (e.g. gmail) which you either periodically check or forward to your real mail box, etc. Or do you just count on that no one is really whatching that data and either ignore it (leave empty) or come up with something arbitrary? Another thing: Is there any debate on who actually owns the domain in case you buy such a privacy feature from the registering company ?
If you're using your registrar's privacy service, your contract with them states your relationships and limits.
