Last night my client contacted the named registrant of the domain name he wants for his company.

He called the lady, it was her, her phone number, her name, but she had never owned a domain name in her life.

I contacted several registrars and they said that she owned it but she is like a 60 year old lady that works at a convienence store

how do i find out who owns the domain

If the contact information isn't returned after a whois query, it will be rather hard find it out.

Even contact information might be a misleading random name or address so I would try publicizing something like "are you the owner of "X" domain" please contact me, I'm interesting in buying."

Sounds like a joke but it's seriously the only idea coming to my mind

I think if that lady has a son or a younger relative who is under 18 that person might have used her informations. If not I can't think of any other reason for a person to use a 60 year old woman's information for whois. If domain is parked try to contact via a link (if there is) if there is a website search for a contact page.
