rofl - I put in a well known local site expecting to get a whois lookup and got one of those valuation tools

Plus it said it was a new domain name, not so when it later tells me that it's a decade old. I get that you mean "not in our system" but you could rephrase that as a chatty "We haven't been asked about that site before, please wait while we gather..."

The value was decidedly lowball and I know the brand awareness in his niche is such that it's worth much more than the $480 estimated.

Decided to check another site that sold a few years back for NZ$700million

The new owners will be most disappointed.

A bit grossed out that under similarly ranked websites you have a stack of adult sites (for both the sites I looked up). It might pay to make sure the sites are workplace friendly or slap a NSFW by the heading and get people to click to display.

This guy will be stoked, a great valuation and, I guess, validation of his crackpot politics.

More porn in the "similar" section.

Are you comparing these sites with sites you've spidered or sites that really do have similar rankings? If it's only from the sites you've spidered then I guess the "adult seo" crowd have found your site and are using it for backlinks.

I was just trying out a few other sites and got this error

I think the problem was because I left the http/https at the beginning. Sloppy - you should be checking for that. You should also customise your error page so that you don't get a nasty Hostgator error.
