Whois data important for Google ranking?

I've read on a few blogs and SEO forums that Google are using WHOIS data to find the age of a website.

Do you think this is true?

    Discuss :D

This is an interesting question that nobody but Google can really answer with certainty. It does, however, make sense for Google to look at how long domains are/have been registered for. A domain that is registered for multiple years at a time is much less likely to be a spam or fly-by-night site than one that was only recently registered and was only registered for one year.

I don't know what the truth is, but I register all of my important domains for five years at a time just to be safe.

Here is an interesting article from SEOmoz about one of Google's patents :

But as KLB said, I think only Google know for sure...

KLB and Monty thanks for responding.

Interesting KLB that you extend your domain for five years. It would be an interesting test to compare the rankings of two old sites, one that has the domain signed up for 12 months and the other 5 years.

I agree that only Google knows - but its interesting getting other peoples opinion.

The problem is that there is no scientific way to run such a test. In order to really issolate out how registration length affected search results, everything else would have to be exactly the same for the test sites. This is impossible to accomplish. Any tests that we could run would be inconclusive because of other factors influancing the possition in the serps for the test pages.

No problem, fingers have a way doing that. ;) The main purpose of comments I make like mine above are about getting people to start thinking critically about what they think they know about certain "truths" in SEO.

Yes, I think they use this WhoIsdata for seeing for how long the site has been registered. This is done while accepting new accounts in Adsense and some other of its services.
