Not Wales. Association football is very much the second sport in Wales behind Rugby Union. They haven't even qualified for the finals of a major tournament since 1958. Even the occupied six counties / Loyal province of Ulster has a better record.

Who's trying to leave the UK? Only 32% of Scots want full devolution and its even less in Wales. If we wanted to leave the UK we wouldn't have to try very hard, we would vote for it and leave.

Why would we want to leave anyway. The PM for the last 10 years has been Scottish, the party in control is Scottish. And Westminster gives us more money per head of pop than it gives England, so it would be stupid to give that up that extra cash and lose power on the international scene.

back on topic, Neither has a great chance atm. But the US will have more of a chance than England in a generations time.. if they keep up their recent good progress and investment.

Your talking about something which is only recently a big issue, and you don't think 32% is a lot? Yes i know the Scots get a lot, they are like your incompetent brother who you always have to bail out, they require a lot of aid..

As long as you keep paying your taxes so we get more cash i don't really care what you tell yourself to make yourself feel better. I never said 32% is alot or not, i was setting you straight on your "they are trying their hardest to leave the UK" comment, 32% the last time i checked is a minority, so "they" is incorrect. You seem to have a very old fashioned stereotype take on Scots, which leads me to think you've probably never been to Scotland.

Obviously one of your Grandfathers had more influence than the other! You said you had a grandad who was a Rangers player and another in the IRA - that's a bit like saying you've got an uncle in the US Marines and another who's a Sunni Insurgent. I have a similar split and I'm never sure at family gatherings whether we'll be singing 'The Ballad of James Connolly' or 'The Sash my Father Wore'.

You're probably aware that Celtic V Rangers (the 'old firm') is Irish Catholic Nationalist against Protestant Unionist. Until very recently no Catholic had ever played for Rangers whereas several Protestants had represented Celtic. One of them was Jock Stein who later became probably the greatest manager Celtic ever had. At half-time during his first old firm derby he was sitting in the dressing room as white as a sheet. One of the older Celtic players came over and asked him what the matter was.
"The Rangers players keep calling me a Fenian bastard!" he complained. The older player waved his hand dismissively.
"Oh, don't worry about it," he said "they always call me that as well."
"That's different!" snapped back Stein, "You ARE one!"

Sorry, gone WAY off topic here ...

Yes the USA will probably win the World Cup before any side from the group of islands off the North West coast of Europe does.

One grandfather was IRA and the other a decedent of Rob Roy. Didn't Scottish rebels get on well with the Irish, kinda like they would both root for who ever is playing England? :D

Remember the US has 30,000,000 illegal aliens who will produce about 180,000,000 children. By the second generation most will switch to American football but the first generation is being recruited into club soccer. The clubs have raised fees for the suburban kids so they can subsidize the boys teams that are filled with boys from the barrio.

When I am waiting for my daughters games to start at large venues I go looking for teams that have coaches screaming out in Spanish. It's great stuff to watch. It won't be many years before you'll see a lot of players named Gomez, Rodriguez, Fernandez, etc gracing the field for the US.

Yes and no. Basically everybody fights everybody else. There's over 2000 years of history and both nationalism and religion have played a part in conflicts. Yes a lot of it was resisting English attempts at conquest for which I blame the French. We lived in relative peace with Scotland and Ireland until the Norman Conquest when the new rulers wanted to consolidate their territories in France and also wanted to add Scotland, Wales and Ireland to their Real Estate portfolio. Oliver Cromwell, being a Puritan, wasn't too well disposed to Catholic Ireland either. (We eventually shipped all the Puritans out to you).

However you also get events like the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 (Bonnie Prince Charlie) which was a war between Catholic and Protestant rather than between Scotland and England. Nearly half the Government army that finally defeated the Rebellion at Culloden in 1746 was Scottish. The original overthrow of the Catholic James II (of the Stuart dynasty), his replacement by the Protestant William of Orange in 1688 and James's final defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 is still vigourously celebrated in Northern Ireland today by the Orangemen (the 'Glorious 12th').

That lead on to todays sectarian divide in Northern Ireland and Glasgow. So if you're a Scottish Rangers fan/player then your bitterest enemy isn't the English - it's Irish Catholics/Nationalists as represented by Celtic football club. Rangers fans wave union flags, Celtic fans wave Irish tricolors.

    It's all good fun!

Edit: Read the Wikipedia article on the Battle of the Boyne here . It will give you an insight into the myriad different loyalties!

I gotta remember to give you some green rep, I don't have any orange rep to give although I live in Orange County.

My Irish grandfather talk about the greatest rivalry in sports and it wasn't the Yankees - Red Sox even though he immigrated to the Bronx. I'm an American so I am free to chose sides so I will cheer for the Gers and might switch over to the Celtics if I like how they are playing. I left the Catholic church as a young adult so maybe that puts me on the Rangers side. Either way, if I made it to a game I'd probably just wear a Detroit Red Wings jersey or a UCI Anteaters jacket and cheer as my random loyalties dictate.

    Thanks for the history lesson.
