With the growth of your soccer in the US I believe that we may see the US win the FIFA World Cup before we see England win it again. I know England has won it before and I also recognize that the cup will be taken on most occasions by Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy or France but at some point the US or England will win.

Who do you think will win first?

I'm old enough to remember watching England win it in 1966! I doubt we'll win it again in my lifetime, we usually go down in plucky defeat, usually on penalties. We then blame everybody (cheatin' foreigners especially) rather than admit we're crap.

PS - tbarr60: Re your other thread and the football/soccer debate, you do know what FIFA stands for don't you? :)

Forgot to add - the UK doesn't have a football team. We play separately as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We have more chance since on paper have one of the best teams in the world but the players just dont show enough passion when together.
Btw the "UK" does not play in the world cup.

I would say England. The United States tends to blow it at big competitions. I think I can count on one hand the number of goals the US has scored in the past 3 World Cups. Soccer just isn't a top sport over here. Our professional league gets much lower ratings than several college sports. Even Little League baseball gets higher TV ratings than soccer.

England. On paper, they do have the better side. And while the USA has produced some decent players in the recent past, the US leagues are still not comparable to the Premiership or even the Championship.

Oooops, I was careful to say England in my post but put UK in the poll. But then again maybe I was opening up the polling to include one one of the four components of the UK: England, Escocia, Wales and the occupied territory of Northern Ireland.

Uhhhh, the Premership? Isn't that the league with a bunch of Portuguese, French, Brazilian, and African players? They haven't been doing so well when they come over and play the mostly American MLS teams in friendlies.

Oh, and Sid, FIFA stands for Federación Internacional de Fútbol Asociado. :D

I do agree with the fact that most of the Premiership teams have foreign players. But that hasn't stifled the growth of English talent.
Let us look at some of the England U-21 players
    Leighton Baines
    Steven Taylor
    Ashley Young
    David Nugent
    Nedum Onuha
    Justin Hoyte
    Leroy Lita
    Anton Ferdinand
    Kieran Richardson
    Nigel Reo Coker

Most of the players on that list play active first team football for Premiership teams. And the Premiership, with all its foreign players, is a very demanding league.

To win the World Cup, you also need luck. Sometimes if England did not have such immense media scrutiny, they might actually perform better than they have done in previous editions of the tournament.

As for friendlies, there is a reason why they are called friendlies right ;)

You don't need a strong domestic league to produce a good international side - and conversely a strong domestic league doesn't mean a strong national side. The Brazilian league is a classic case in point.

That is so true. England always go out there under the weight of the most ridiculous expectation. Take the last World Cup and all that 'Golden Generation' bollocks: "The best England team since 1970!" crowed the media. The 'hand of history' meant they were beaten before they started. (And they weren't 'the best team since 1970'. They weren't a patch on the 1990 team for example - but that's another point entirely).

You could see it in the recent laboured Euro qualifying victory over Andorra. (Andorra!) Nobody played badly, but they all played within themselves as they were all terrified of making a mistake. We've got to lose the fear - then perhaps we also won't bottle the penalty shoot-outs.

The US isn't known for its soccer - as for England, we invented the game! Definitely England.

Haven't we won two of the last three World Cups and the last one was without Mia Hamm. :D

I do believe it was China that invented the game. Don't worry Canada's game came from Holland and America's national pastime came from Ireland.
