    Eisenhower ;

He saw the dangers in the growth of military-industrial complex before many others.

I believe Andrew Jackson was the best president in the history of the US. Anyone here at DP who has done their research should know that Andrew Jackson was the first President in history to "defeat the bank". He erased the US federal debt, and put a chokehold on the banks so bad that they tried to kill him.

The only thing I don't agree with Andrew Jackson on was slavery, but other than that, he gets my vote.

Eisenhower was a good president to.

Lincoln had the "cahonus" to suspend certain liberties of the Constitution (writ of habeas corpus) to restore and maintain order during the Civil War. When the Supreme Court Chief Justice hinted at the president overstepping his authority, Abe threatened (joked really) to have the Chief Justice jailed ... no more problems.

My first choice was FDR but since his name isn't there, I'd just go for George Washington.

Didn't Honest Abe's political ineptitude get us involved in a preventable civil war which killed off ten percent of the countries population? My knowledge of Civil War history isn't very good, but I am surprised at how well Lincoln is remembered.

And how can Kennedy be remembered well after he sent all of those Cuban patriots to their deaths at the Bay of Pigs? It seems to me that he should have committed to their success by supporting them -- or not have sent them in the first place. Either decision would have been better than the awful middle ground that he let occur, where he put men on the beach and then did not support them. That doesn't seem like something that would win you a lot of friends, at least not among the families of the guys on the beach.

The Civil War was not preventable and did not merely erupt overnight. The tensions actually began in 1850, more than a decade before Lincoln went to D.C.

I don't want to get into a dissertation about the variables per se, but when Kansas was being debated (its statehood), the tensions over states rights and slavery really began to heat up.

I suppose it could be said that the war was preventable if you did not want to preserve the Republic (nation).

The war did not start over slavery, but it was the war that ended slavery.

The first shots fired at Fort Sumter (April 12, 1861) that started the bloodshed of the war, were fired by the South. The war may have been preventable, but it was desired too badly by too many.

What'd Clinton do to be considered great? I can't think of one historical thing in those 8 years.

One banged a media icon, the other banged the fat chick that gets the coffee in the morning. Sounds like the start of a joke.

Yes, but is there any proof that JFK did it in the oval office?

Maybe you never heard of this little thing called the deficit. You know the one that Clinton was making great progress on, and the one the George Cowboy Bush has sent to an all time high

Seriously. Thats the first thing that comes to mind? Lowering the deficit a little bit is hardly a "great" accomplishment.

Lowering deficit pushed the American dollar up and improved the American workers buying power while Bush by increasing the deficit lowered the value of American dollar and decreased the workers buying power.

During the Bush presidency American workers got a pay cut of over 30% in comparison to the rest of the world. ;)

The point is, is that the deficit is a problem that can (theoretically) come and go. It is not some great accomplishment. Wiping it out, doesn't mean it can't come back again.

Other presidents in the survey have done things that substantially changed the course of history. The only thing that Clinton changed was decades of Democrat control of the House/Senate to the republicans. Other than that, he did nothing at all.
