I would quit day job if the earnings were at least 3 times, and waiting at least a year of that constant revenue, just to see that it is reliable, and to save some money for non desired surprises.
According to http://www.globalrichlist.com/ I am number 149,606,957 in the world... Very good for a country like the one I live. I have no real life job but I am working like 3-5 hours online/day every day (including weekends, it's more pleasant for me knowing my weekend time is rewarded, specially now that the time outside is cloudy and raining almost everyday)
I am also trying t turn my site into an online pet supply store. I am trying to earn enough from adsense that will pay for all the stuff I have to file to open the store. It truly would be wonderful if my site some day makes enough that not only am I able to stay at home but also my fiance. I can understand what people are saying about it being stupid or whatever to try to live off of adsense. You never know what could happen.

^ Yeah in my country too, $400 will give you a decent living and enough to all bills, including TV cable and Internet I'll retire and do full time online job, if my earning is consistently above $1000 for 6 months I have make a reasonable timetable, I expecting that in early/mid 2009, I'm still totally new in online business. But I believe I can do this!

^ Yep...m8 We deal in millions, a single meal is only Rp 6000 = $ 70 cents, 1 gallon gasoline : Rp 15000 = $ 1.7, etc Life is cheap here, If I got $ 4000/month from adsense I can buy myself a nice house and car in one year

SGD$1.00 = RP6400 now... from 5800.. still got some millions of rupiahs not yet spent.. what a loss... if 1 month , i get USD$4000 = SGD$5800 = 37 mILLION rupiahs...hmmm good life in bali OR just enough to survive paying bills and expenses? batam is near to singapore BUT people go there for the wrong reasons... even if you bring $10000 there also will finish and end up in the drain..
Well, when my online income gets well above $10,000 per month and diversified, then I can consider quiting the day job. Southern California isn't cheap but it's beautiful and real estate appreciation is a great source of wealth.
The definition of a day job is different for me. I stopped working for the man years back (2001) but that was not because of AdSense (it wasn't even born then... correct me if I am wrong). I have two businesses and they are reasonably successful. Having said that, I have been lured every now and then by the the promise and potential of AdSense. But I always tell myself that AdSense only supplements (a decent chunk) my overall income. I simply cannot rely on another company (Google) dictating my life (just like the man). Yes, my Adsense earnings are big... 4 more years and I can retire for life BUT here are some pearls of wisdom - If you are not happy working in a company, start your own - DON'T ever think AdSense will see you through your life. Always keep options open and never leave something that you have a full-control on.
Good for you may live with only $400 per month... Not the same situation in my country (Romania)... Here you must do at least $1000 in order to get a decent living, specially since it entered the EU... And, unfortunately, Romania is not a paradise at all. Here rules are meant to be broken
