who owns wikipedia and how do they make money?

    I would guess they could make at least six figures a day if properly monetized. They have huge amounts of traffic, and most of their topics rank in the top 5 results in Google for that specific keyword. They are a non-profit, which makes selling their assets (such as the site itself) a very tricky situation. The founders do have other projects with lots of interest from venture capitalists, so I'm sure they're not starving.

    I was once told they were originally formed as a tax shelter for someone, I forget who though. (thats probably totally false just rumors) Pretty profit potential tax shelter though

    Wikipedia is a great website however it has the worst bloody search in the world. Like hell, get a bloody spell checker.
    Otherwise just grand.
    And it's gonna sell for a lot if they ever do.
