Who killed the electric car?

I just saw this the other day.

GM had a nice electric vehicle, the EV1, that did about 100 miles on a charge and produced ZERO emissions. They eventually took all of them away as people's leases expired and destroyed them. Why?

Fuel cell technology is at least another 15-20 years away. If they had stuck to producing these cars to this day I'm sure they would have improved the technology a lot and have the cars running even longer on a single charge. Looks like a very good solution to our pollution problems. However, the auto makers would not make that much on them since there are a lot less parts than in gas cars. The oil companies wouldn't allow it either. The government of California caved in to the auto industries demands to lessen emission restrictions.

    It's really a shame :(

I don't quite get this myself... Everyone talks about new technologies but they never use them.

PS: The now do mobile phones that go for a month without charging.
