creating your own logo/header is a good point to start

Firstly, I would not put the question this way :) Secondly, too much space is lost for the welcome part besides the logo. Good luck!

Move your forums up above the header

    I reckon ~

Move the shoutbox elsewhere because it makes you have to scroll down alot more than you should. And its not something I would really want to have to scroll past when viewing the index, forums, topics etc.

yeah everything above really, you could do with a bit of bespoking on the graphics and the theme.
I've got an SMF forum on my site and with a bit of tinkering with the CSS was able to pretty much replicate the overall site colour scheme and layout in the forum itself.
Check out the main site here - www.theroundup.co.uk
and the forum site here - www.theroundup.co.uk/forum

I found this site really helpful when I was tampering with the CSS layout:

    Good luck!
