Who is Intermix Media and why are they sending me checks?

I keep getting checks from a company called "Intermix Media Inc" but I have NO idea what this is for or who they are? Are they affiliated with any other popular services I may be unaware of?

I'm not complaining, but I may want to know who they are in case I'm moving or would like to change my details!

    BEWARE!

Intermix hit with spyware suit | CNET News.com
"New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed a lawsuit against Web marketer Intermix Media on Thursday, charging it with being a source of adware and spyware programs that hinder online commerce and security.

Spitzer's office, describing the suit as the "most sweeping case to date involving programs that redirect Web addresses, add toolbars and deliver pop-up ads," said it arose from a six-month investigation of Intermix. The probe found that Intermix was installing advertising software on home computers without informing the owners that it was doing so, Spitzer's office said."

    http://news.com.com/Intermix+hit+with+spyware+suit/2100-7348_3-5688609.html

Maybe you didn't sign up with them directly but are promoting one of their other programs:

"According to the New York Attorney General's office, the free software Intermix made available at its Web sites during the investigation, including downloadable screensavers, screen cursors and games, also secretly installed a number of programs that generated advertisements. One program, known as "KeenValue" delivered pop-up ads, according to the lawsuit. Another program, dubbed "IncrediFind," redirected visitors to certain Web addresses to an Intermix-owned search engine, while yet another reportedly embedded advertising toolbars on PC desktops."

ANOTHER OPTION is that a fraudster signed up for the program using all of your contact details. There's an affiliate fraud ring that's signed up for HUNDREDS of affiliate programs pretending to be me.

They typically change the pay to address right before they expect to earn a check. Sometimes they forget though and I get checks from companies I never joined and never promoted. I just sent the check back or throw it away and try to notify the company about the fraud.

Thanks for the headsup 5Star. :) That is so peculiar that people would be interested in posing as you...to do affiliate fraud. So bold.

Actually it's fairly common for those guys to pose as people well known in the industry. They've impersonated Shawn Collins and many others too, just thinking they'll slide in easily because managers will be so excited to have someone of that caliber join their program.

It SUCKS though because a few merchants that don't know who I am, think I'm the one committing the fraud once the fraudulent transactions start hitting the books. :(

I sent an email to Intermix media and asked them why the heck are you sending me checks you bastards?! I also asked if they could check for my records - it could be that I lost my password. ;)

By the way, where is their login page? Can't find a way to login anywhere on
    http://www.intermix.com/

    Is it just me?

Just a FYI, Intermix was the company who started Myspace. It was sold later to NewsCorp last year. That spyware suit was for something that happened over 3yrs ago under a totally different management team than it has today. Eliot Spitzer was just trying to beef up his campaign by going after a little company for $7.5m.

I have no idea why you would be getting a check from them. Maybe it ties in with this lawsuit settlement.
