Who is better registering the domain me or customer?

Just a quick piece of advice. I build sites for others, small businesses and hobby sites mainly, I don't claim to be brilliant and like to stick with these sort of sites.

My question is.....Is it better for them to register the domain and get the reminders or me to register it and then email and remind them when it is up for renewal. At the moment I am doing the latter, but would it be better to do it the other way?

    Thanks for any advice.

I think its their responsibility.. by letting you do it they lose their rights over the domain because they rely on you for everything that has to do with it.

It is in their best interest (and your's) to have them register the domain.

Thanks for the advice, its just some people have little or no idea about these things and want you to do it all. The trouble is you end up baby sitting the site for them forever.

Well, the domain name is your customer's property, it should be registered in their name. You can always assist them in registering the domain name and then just setting your customer as registrant and all the contacts except technical contact. If they set the domain name to auto-renew year after year or if you prepay for a good forseeable future, you do not need to worry about renewal.

I would get the domain name registered in the Clients name.

From the clients perspective, owning the domain name is one of the most important factors for their Internet business.

Teach them if necessary, it will help you build the trust factor especially with your new clients.
