Both are good at their places but I'd go with XP for reduced problems in instaling various programming stuffs...but yes look and feel of windows 7 is good...it depends on your work what type of work you will do on the machine..and which look you like the most....

there is no doubt about it windows 7 is the best operating system and the reasons are a bit technical, but the upshot is that 64 bit is the future. while there were 64-bit versions of XP in the past, they aren't for sale anymore, and are not for typical consumer use anyway.the newer 64-bit computers are faster and more powerful than their 32-bit brethren, and software is starting to appear that takes advantage of 64-bit power.

Better use Windows 7 now unless you are running on a slow system.

ok win7 is not the worst os (worst is vista lol) but xp is way mooore professional, clever, better than win7 as long as i saw.
i have been using win7 since last 2 weeks and i have noted some annoying points that you could do in xp and removed from win7:

    > in win7 icons for specific file types cannot be changed (i dont mean mycomputer icon or recyclebin icon, i mean a .php file or a .mp3 file or .jpg file icons)
    > in internet explorer, page title is removed from the top blue bar, now there is a useless blue space instead :)
    > if you try to put a shortcut to desktop from ie by dragging the favicon from the adressbar to desktop, ie closes the tab and reopens seperately! if you have a session on it, it gets lost!
    > in power options, you cannot assign "ask me what to do" job, it was a very cool feature if your power button can be pressed mistakely (making it do nothing can solve but it make things slower cuz you need to click on start, and then powering arrow and then choose which one needed)
    > if you mute your speaker, and make your computer sleep (standby) and then recover, mute disables! if there is a flashgame or anything noisy at the background, a noise welcomes you and disturbes if you work at midnight, especially someone sleeping around you
    > in temporary internet files folder, you can only see favicon.ico and cookies, if you need to see everything, you need to add /low folder in addressbar (which an average user cannot guess this, why all files are hidden i dont understand)
    > a simple .txt file cannot be pinned to quick launch bar, i have a simple notes.txt file and i regularly access it and add some text in it, but cannot pin it. win7 pins notepad instead.
    > battery life degreased around 30% when DOWNGRADED from xp to win7 :)
    > win7 uses cpu too much on the background, my cpu fan never stops, and in xp, cpu fan was never working, only on heavy tasks such as a flash object displayed, browsing youtube etc.
    > file copy or move tasks are dramatically slower on win7, i have compared with identical computers, one was xp and one win7. even canceling a file copy takes couple of seconds where xp file copy cancellation is instant!
    > if you eject a usb hdd to safely removing, win7 never stops the hdd disks internal motors! ok it stops the disk access but hdd motors keeps working! and when you unplug the hdd you can hear the motor cut form electricity cuuvvvvvv :) but xp also stops the hdd motors. i think this is much more healthier!
    > if you left click on win7 battery icon, you will see "adjust screen brightness" and "more power options". and both of them goes to the same setting window!! i dont understand the point here lol. developer should have been smoked a lot and got high when putting those links on power menu lol
    > mycomputer cannot be pinned to quick launch bar, it seems to be pinned but it pins library instead. and if you have closed the left pane from folders, you'll have some difficulties navigating

all of these problems never ever exist on a xp machine. and i have noted these problems by ONLY 2 WEEKS usage :) so nobody tell win7 is better.

Windows 7 is far better than Windows XP in my opinion. When there was no Windows 7 then XP was the king. But 7 now overshadows XP.
